Mutek's in Town
Montreal is known for our extravagant summer festivals, like the ginormous Jazz Fest, but Mutek is a better kept little secret. Not so little anymore actually, I have to admit; it’s more like the growing secret, which just reached its tenth anniversary. And in two short years it will be a teenager, growing widely, sleeping till 2 PM, “showering” for two hours, and getting drunk on two large Heinekens. For those who are still kept on the secret side of the festival, Mutek is a celebration of everything that is electronic, mostly the music, but also its artists and its techniques. Mutek showcases live electronic artists that you would otherwise never catch in town, multi-faced events mashing up music with street or digital art and installations, and finally discussion panels on creating or consuming everything digitally numeric. This multidisciplinary approach is part of the success of Mutek. Being a passive observer, grooving at a show is no longer enough for our Twitter and Facebook-confused generation. We also need to experiment but most importantly, we also need to imitate our inspirations, to create art and disseminate it on the pages and walls and inboxes of our “friends” and buddies and contacts and whomever has a computer and enough time to listen to our ranting loops and samples, or read our infatuations or even our useless answers to futilities like “what are you doing right now”. Yet, amongst this group of ego and personality masturbators, some truly beautiful new flowers will rise, and will blossom. And this is the secret of Mutek; it empowers you and me to discover a whole new world of artistic expression, and if ever you truly turn out to be talented, then you’ll learn valuable lessons from Mutek’s panels and extract juicy inspiration from Mutek’s shows. So get out there and enjoy the shows and the events. It’s only for a limited time. You’ll be free to blog about it for days after its done; but for now, get wet under the rain and head to Mutek. Here is what you can expect from a more cutting-edge event at Mutek: And bellow, a more down-to-earth accessible Mutek show:
