As you might know, the joke goes something like: “everything is big in Japan” or “at least this otherwise unknown band is big in Japan”.

Fact is, Japanese people don’t only eat sushi. I’ve known that for a while, but a part from teriyakis, I really had no idea what fast or semi-fast Japanese food really was.

Well now I know, because I visited Big in Japan yesterday. Located on St-Laurent and Pine Avenue (where Le Pistol used to be), Big in Japan is a Japanese-styled eatery and drinkery. I strongly recommend the pork products and all radish and other odd-vegetable based salads, they have what I imagine to be a truly Japanese taste. Also make sure you ask for some wasabi, it’s not the industrial green variety you usually get and it is amazing.

As for the drinking, you have the traditional sake and selection of beers. The décor includes a display case with Japanese memorabilia and waiters wearing skirts. Talking about waiters, I must mention the staff was pretty cool.

For chilling and socializing while tasting something different Big and Japan is the place. For eating and pre-drinking before hitting the clubs, Big and Japan is the place too. Just don’t fanaticize for any geishas to bust dancing moves there, it’s truly a sit down and chill eatery.

The owner/manager is completely disrespectful to customers. Rude and full of himself. Too bad because the place is great. But will never go back again

This place is shit, bring back Pistols. Who needs another fuckin' asain resto, the city is full of them. This place tries to come off as some sort of Japanese style bar, but they only serve one type of shitty beer, not even available in Pints. The food is OK the waiter that served me was slow and not helpful. A little hipster asian kid he was.
